First day back August 2016

first day2016

It was great to see faces new and old today. Interesting, comparing the first assembly in 2013 to today. In 2013, we hardly filled the middle section, parents and students. Now, even without grade 1 present yet, we almost filled the hall.

Almost all the staff were present and stood before the students, so they could see their faces. They guessed their names and nationalities.

We talked about expectations at school, for both students and teachers. We talked about the playground, we talked about the school and all was wrapped in a theme of respect and friendship.

All the students were re-assigned in houses and were then sent off to start their first day back at Asker International School.

Welcome to all!

Mobile Phones use

As we wade through the new media age, it is important that we stop to take stock of the world our children live in. We value the digital age and are excited by the prospects facing education as we move ahead. That being said, we are also cautiously viewing how we and our students are interacting with these technologies.

In line with this, we are revising our guidelines and expectations for students at AIS. We have seen some big developments in the use of augmented reality over recent months and the sentiment is that it is here to say. As such, we need to evaluate how mobile phones, and other devices, are used at school. This is not a new topic and has been discussed globally for many years, the UK being one of many countries to assess the impact of mobile phones on the school population.

We ask parents to help us embed a culture of safety and responsibility when it comes to exposure to and use of technology. We have set some initial guidelines and we will reinforce these as we progress through the year. To start with we will be ensuring the following takes place:

  •  - Students do not use their phones in school, unless specified by their teacher for educational purposes.
  •  - Student phones are turned off when they arrive at school. Parents can contact the school if they need to pass on a message to their child.
  •  - If children are seen not complying to this rule, their phone will be confiscated and parents notified.
  •  - Taking pictures or videos of others without their consent at any time is strictly forbidden.
  •  - Students will be instructed to go directly home at the end of school, unless otherwise specified by parents. Students are not to gather at augmented reality spots that may     cause distress to people in the general community, or lead them to enter private property (referencing games such as Pokemon Go).

In line with the above points, all of which will be communicated to the students on the first day of school, we also ask parents to use their phones responsibly and discuss these points with their children.

Updated Calendar

The new school calendar has been posted on the parent guide tab and also below. The school recommends that parents look at the calendar carefully and plan around these dates. We also strongly recommend that the image is downloaded to your phone or printed out and placed on your fridge door, so you can see it every day.

Not all events have been posted on the calendar. There will be extra events added throughout the year. We encourage you to observe the live calendar on the left for updates and notify us if we miss an event, as oversight can and will occur.

We look forward to seeing all students and parents back in the new school year.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

PEACElympics a wonderful success

Peacelympics1

It is hard to say what the most enjoyable aspect of this year's PEACElympics event was. From the tug of water event, to the water fill, from the bean bag race to the relay race. Everything was done so well and the staff and students were superb.

Action is a very important part of both the primary and middle years programmes and grades 6 and 7 put on a great effort. They ran all the stations as the students and staff of AIS rotated through the activities, engaging themselves in a wide array of activities.

Each group was broken into their junior and senior houses and a staff member accompanied each group.

We also had volunteer parents in attendance, running events, taking pictures and being generally supportive, making the day a huge success.

And finally Mr. Andrew. What a well-run event. Everyone knew what to do, where to go and everyone had a wonderful experience. We hope Mr. Andrew is proud of his efforts and we look to PEACElympics in 2017, an event that has become a cornerstone in the school's culture.
